The Problem:

Federal Animal Rights laws in Canada are severely outdated, with Canada even receiving a grade of ‘D’ from the World Animal Protection Index.

In fact, under Canadian Federal law animals are still classified as property instead of as sentient beings, creating weak laws that leave ownerless animals like strays without protection and cause complications in custody disputes during divorces or theft.

92% of Canadians support stronger animal rights laws. Despite this, change has been difficult to implement.

The Loophole:

The Pet-ition is a legally viable petition despite being signed by pets. This is because Canadian Petition Law is very specific about many things, but doesn’t specify that you must be human to sign.

You just need a name, a Canadian address, and a signature (a paw print in this case as it is genetically unique to each animal), things that pets all have.

Our Goal:

Our goal is to change Federal Law to recognize animals as Sentient Beings instead of merely as property; a change which both New Zealand and the UK have already made.
